Top Tips for Cleaning and Organizing Your Fridge

Many home decor experts and neophytes alike claim that the kitchen serves as the focal point of most homes. Furthermore, the fridge serves as the object of interest for many of the occupants of a home, as it contains comfort food and other items that people will serve on special occasions and the like.

However, negligence can lead to problems, such as expired food, pungent odours, tough grime and residue, and other issues that should be taken care of as soon as possible. Here, we provide some cleaning tips that you can use to clean and organize your fridge.

Buy a Few Baskets

You can purchase a few cheap baskets from your local dollar store in order to house some of your smaller food items. For instance, you can use brightly coloured baskets to store bottles that keep tipping over. Eggs and things that are stored in bags of plastic, such as cheese and tomato pizza slices can also be kept in baskets.

Get Rid of Clutter

Upon closer inspection, you may realize that there are a plethora of food items that have seen better days in your fridge. Many things may have expired, and you may also have certain items that you simply don’t enjoy eating or using to prepare your meals. In fact, some items do not even need to be refrigerated, such as potatoes, so please store such items in your cabinets so that you will have less clutter in your fridge.

Take Care of Your Crisper

We would recommend that you line your vegetable crisper with either a few newspapers or some paper towels for two reasons. Doing so will allow the juices that are secreted by your fruits and vegetables to be absorbed by the material, which will allow you to clean out your drawers with ease.

Then, once the liner has been spent, simply toss it out and place a new one in. The second reason for lining your crisper with newspapers or paper towels is that doing so will absorb extra moisture from your fruits and vegetables. The result is that your food will stay fresh for far longer and, as a bonus, will also be crisper and more delicious.

Get Rid of Your Plastic Bags

Virtually everyone knows that plastic bags are hazardous to the environment, as they are not biodegradable and end up in landfills. However, did you know that they will also cause your vegetables and fruits to spoil at an accelerated rate?

As such, avoid using plastic bags to store your fruits and vegetables. Plastic not only accelerates spoilage but will also make it impossible to determine what is inside them, unless you have x-ray vision. Instead, we would suggest that you keep them loose in your crisper. Or, you can organize them in an organizing basket or place them in some open mesh.

Follow the One Bottle Rule

Another easy way to reduce clutter in your fridge is to adhere to the one bottle rule. Essentially, you should stick to only one bottle of each condiment (for example, ketchup, mustard, mayo, relish, and salad dressing) at any given moment in your fridge. However, if there is a special on condiments at your local supermarket, then you can buy a few extra bottles or containers and store them in your pantry until the supply in your fridge runs out.

Avoid Using Plates

Many people will use plates to store certain items in their fridge, but we would recommend that you avoid using plates for storage purposes. In other words, you may want to use sturdy containers with lids for your food storage. After all, the last thing you will want to deal with is spoiled or mouldy plates of food, not to mention spills that could have easily been avoided had the food been stored in an airtight container.

And Cups While You’re At It

Some people will also use cups to store their drinks or leftover liquids, which serves as a recipe for disaster, especially if you have kids living in your home. As such, you should avoid using cups to store liquids in your fridge. They can easily be tipped over and spill, and they may also spread unpleasant odours in and around your fridge that you will want to avoid at all costs.

Designate Different Shelves for Different Food Categories

If clutter has become an issue, then one easy way to reduce and find items easier is to designate each shelf in your fridge for a different type or category of food and drink. For instance, one shelf can be designated for leftovers, while another can be reserved for snacks or beverages.

The end result is your fridge will appear neater, and you will be able to find what you want to eat or drink quicker as well. You can also write the category of food on the lip of each shelf using a dry erase marker. This is handy, especially if you are having trouble keeping track of what food and drink go where.

Use Plastic Placemats

If drips and spills are common in your household, then you can line the shelves in your fridge with plastic placemats. In the event that a spill does occur, all you will need to do is take the mats out of your fridge and then rinse them off in the sink. Trust us; your lower back will thank you.
